Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has described the idea of returning power to the South in 2023 as wishful thinking.
The two- time former governor of Nasarawa State stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.
He maintained that since the idea of zoning is not in the country’ s constitution, all eligible Nigerians would be able to contest the 2023 presidential election, irrespective of their country of origin.
He said, ” Nowhere in the Nigerian Constitution does it say you have to stick to any public office.
” There is no provision in the Constitution that says no political office for anybody. But it is not that political parties should stick to presidential offices in elections.
” The constitution will be reviewed. If you want there to be a special provision for zoning of presidential seats, say so, and tell us how you want it to be zoned.
” Do we have something like that in the US Constitution? Are we more democratic than the Americans?
” This is democracy. Why do you want to change it? It’ s just a wish. How do you put it on the belt?
” Yes, someone says there was no president in the East. I agree and I sympathise with them, but the Constitution says you can only become president through the ballot box.
” We have said in the elections that every vote must count. So why do you want to go into the zone? Give life to your mind if you want to be given life. “
