A 21-year-old lady was among 15 traffic robbers arrested in various areas of Lagos State in a series of raids conducted by the state police command, the command announced on Sunday, January 31.
The lady, Desire Chukwu, was arrested with her accomplice, Oluwadamilare Folami, at the Ipaja bridge around midnight while they were about to rob people in traffic using a motorcycle for the operation.
According to a statement by the state police command on Sunday through its Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on the Twitter handle of the command @LagosPoliceng, when the lady and her accomplice were arrested, a locally-made pistol, charms and weed suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from them.
Also, the police said 13 traffic robbers who also always posed as load carriers were arrested in Oshodi and Ketu areas of the state after the police received information about their activities.
According to the statement: “The police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 15 suspected traffic robbers in Oshodi, Ipaja and Ketu areas of the state, as it intensifies efforts in mopping up criminals suspected to be attacking motorists and commuters in traffic.
“In the first arrest, police operatives attached to Meiran Division of the command arrested two suspected traffic robbers at Ipaja Bridge, while on pind own point, at 11:20 p.m. The suspects were stopped while on a motorbike before they were arrested and searched.
“The two suspects are Oluwadamilare Folami, male, 22 years and Desire Chukwu, female, 21 years.
“Upon search, one locally-made pistol, charms and weed suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from them.
“The police also arrested 13 suspected traffic robbers in Oshodi and Ketu areas of the state. This came on the heels of the four-day surveillance on black spots in Oshodi and Ketu with a view to weeding out criminals in the areas.
“It was reliably gathered that the suspects always pretended to be load carriers in Oshodi, but abscond with travellers’ loads at night. It has also been gathered that they often attack and rob unsuspecting Lagosians, especially travellers and commuters, in the areas.
Those that were picked up in Oshodi and Ketu included Ajibola Tinuola (18 years), Adeniji Farouk (16 years), Wale Ajetunmobi (24 years), Chibueze Okasa (17 years), Taiwo Goodluck (36 years).
“Others were: Sodiq Timileyin (23 years), Salami Alex (21 years), Umar Abubakar (20 years), Michael Iroaja (36 years), Abba Mohammed (20 years), Mukaila Fasepe (43 years), Saviour Nwoko (21 years) and Ayomide David (19 years).
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has directed that the 15 suspects be transferred to State CID, Panti, Yaba, for proper investigation.”
