3 Reasons Why Lionel Messi Does Not Deserve The Ballon d Or Award This Year

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has been included in the 30 man shortlist of nominees for the Ballon d’Or award. This has been met with widespread happiness as it is the opinion of many football fans that he deserves the award this year.

While I am not here to explain that he should not be nominated as that would be wrong considering the quality of his last season. Below are three reasons why he should not be the recipient of the 2021 Ballon d’Or award.
Unfairness to Lewandowski

The first two people that come to mind when you think of the Ballon d’Or winner this year are Lionel Messi and Jorginho. Well if people were quizzed as to who else deserves the award apart from these two then the Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski comes to mind. To be fair, he actually deserves to be rated the way he is this season but the reason why the Ballon d’Or has been unfair to him is more far fetched than that.

If we take a walk down memory lane to the end of last year when France Football decided to scrap off the award due to COVID-19 reasons, it feels like it is no longer Lewandowski’s fault that the award has eluded him so far as he was the clear frontrunner last year.

He hasn’t slowed down this season either as an injury was the only reason why he wasn’t able to propel his team to UCL success this season. Despite his injury woes he managed to smash Gerd Muller’s record of 41 league goals in a season. These put together with the fact that he was snubbed by the award last season create a very sane point that he deserves the award this season.

Recent History Of The Ballon d’Or

One major talking point of supporters of Messi for the Ballon d’Or award is the fact that he won the Copa America. While this is a nice trophy to add to his already large collection it doesn’t qualify him more for the award than any other player.

At least that is what the organisers of the award have made us feel. When we consider the recent international competitions held and the winners of the award it becomes clear that while winning an international trophy boosts you in the nominations list, maybe even into the top 5 it doesn’t guarantee you the award.

For example Luka Modric’s win was the year when France won the World Cup, similar to Ronaldo being snubbed for the award after coming off a Nations league trophy win. While I believe Messi should make it to the top 5 because of his Copa America Heroics, saying he should win the award because of that is absurd.

Performance of Jorginho

The candidate who most Chelsea fans believe deserves this award this season is the hardworking midfielder Jorginho. The creative passer who was brought in during Maurizio Sarri’s reign in charge of the Blues has just hit the prime of his career.

He was integral to his teams UCL win, stacking up large numbers of interceptions per game. He was also equally important in his country’s Euro win. These incredible performances make a strong case for why he deserves the award as it is not coincidental that wherever he plays trophies follow, after all his award as UEFA’s player of the year was well deserved.

The same cannot be said of Lionel Messi as a poor showing by his team in the UCL and La Liga cannot be covered up by his Copa America win. This is in strong contrast to Jorginho who’s team performed well club football wise and international football alike.
