The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a proscribed group in Nigeria, have started growing at a rate that could be best described as alarming. IPOB, which first started as a secessionist group, may have, under our noses, grown to become a terror organization that is now capable of launching attacks against security agents in the South- East, where they are predominantly located. The writer opines that this is a strong cause for concern.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the Presidency affirmed the position of the writer by insisting that IPOB have been attacking and killing innocent civilians and security agents in the South- East.
Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, also revealed that as a designated terror organization, IPOB now has about 50, 000 strong militants that have been launching attacks in the South- East.
Why should all these be a source of concern for Nigerians and the government?
First, IPOB are now slowly showing terror tendencies by holding some states in the country to ransom.
The group is slowly attempting to hold South- East states hostage with their sit- at- home directives.
Note that a terrorist organization is one that seeks to control certain regions in a Sovereign state.
Furthermore, one may recall that Boko- Haram, one of the most feared terror organizations in the world, started in a way that is quite similar to IPOB’ s recent mode of operation.
Indeed, one may also be concerned as to the claim by the Presidency that IPOB now controls a militia of about 50, 000 persons. Security agents would have to be placed on red alert to forestall any act of terror that may be launched by the group.
