Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the main Igbo socio-cultural body, has condemned the Northern elders’ unwillingness to speak out against the alleged continuous marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria.
The organisation slammed President Muhammadu Buhari’s dot-in-a-circle remark directed against the Igbo people in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Tuesday, 15th of June, 2021.
Last Thursday, 10th of June 2021, Buhari claimed that his administration would mobilize the military and police to pursue the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who are accused of disrupting the peace in the South East region.
IPOB, he claimed, is “simply like a dot in a circle,” with nowhere to turn. They have no idea what they’re doing. We’ll deal with them by mobilizing the police and troops to pursue them. ”
Buhari also slammed supporters of the Biafra and Oduduwa republics. However, Ohanaeze responded by calling the President’s remark “disastrous,” saying that “no damage control or image laundering will alleviate this collective onslaught on Ndigbo.” According to the group, the northern leaders’ silence demonstrates that they are satisfied with President Buhari’s stand in Southeastern Nigeria. Ohanaeze challenged Northern leaders to speak up against the marginalization of the Igbos in the country.
The group also alleged that about 513 Igbo youths have been killed by security agents in the last 160 days, while more than 2million have been arrested or missing. They urged President Buhari to stop the military operations going on in the South East region.
IPOB was created for the purpose of fighting for the independence of the Biafra State. The group was proscribed by the government in 2017 due to anti-government activities.
The government has accused IPOB of sponsoring attacks on security agents and public buildings in the region. President Buhari has directed security agents to treat promoters of insurrection in the language they understand.
A joint operation by the police, the army and other security agencies is currently going on in the region.
