ANAMBRA ELECTION: Soludo Emerges Winner, Refuses To Dedicate Victory To Supporters; SEE The Three People He Dedicated It To

In the early hours of Wednesday, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, was declared winner of the Anambra State Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

With the victory, Professor Soludo made history as he became the second CBN Governor to become a governor of a state, taking after the late Clement Isong of the old Cross River State, who in 1979, became a governor, after his stint as CBN Governor.

Contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Soludo was declared winner following the supplementary election held in Ihiala Local Government Area on Tuesday.

Who Soludo Dedicated His Victory To

Speaking after he was announced winner, Soludo dedicated his victory at the poll to the three policemen, who were killed at a town hall meeting in his native town of Isuofia, Aguta Local Government Area of the state, in April 2021, while meeting with his kindred on his gubernatorial ambition.

Accepting the results of the tension-soaked election, where his APGA party scored 112, 229 votes to beat the rival Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to a distant second position with 54, 807 votes, while the projected All Progressive Congress, APC garnered only 43,285 votes and the Young Progressives Party, YPP, scoring 21,261 votes, the former CBN Governor said that the result reflected the will of Ndi Anambra.

His words: “Let me say with utmost humility and gratitude to God, I accept the results of the 2021 Anambra Governorship Election as declared by INEC. And this reflects the supreme will of the Almighty God and an overwhelming sacred mandate of the people…This is a divine journey whose time has come.

“The election itself tested the integrity of our federal institutions. Many times there were tensions, especially as one party boasted that it must take or ‘conquer’ but the judiciary stood for the integrity of the judiciary”, the elated governor-elect added

Soludo, who offered an arm of fellowship to his contenders at the election, promised to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Anambra State, and thanked the incumbent Governor Willie Obaino for his support.

Earlier, the Returning Officer of the Anambra Governorship Election, Professor Florence Obi, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, had, at the INEC office in Awka, the state capital, announced: “That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected”.

Soludo’s APGA, at the end of the election, won 19 LGAs out of 21 LGAs in the state, while the DP and the YPP won one LGA apiece.

When sworn in as the Governor of Anambra State in March 2022, when the tenure of Obaino would have expired, Soludo would assume the sobriquet of “Double Governor” having been both the CBN Governor and the Anambra State Governor in the current political dispensation.

ADC Candidate Reveals He Voted For Soludo, Explains Why

The governorship candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) Akachukwu Nwankpo revealed shortly after casting his ballot in the supplementary election going on in Anambra State to elect a new governor that he voted against himself.

He however revealed that he voted his rival the eventual winner, Soludo of APGA.

Explaining why, he said he took the decision because his party had no chance of winning after the election on Saturday, November 6.

The ADC candidate voted at Umuapani ward, polling unit 004 on Tuesday.

According to him, APGA had 90% chances of winning the election, to avoid wasting more resources, he needed to vote for the candidate with the best chance of winning.

The decision to suspend the election was taken a few minutes into Monday morning, with INEC declaring a supplementary election scheduled for November 9.

As of Sunday evening, Soludo was leading with a margin of 52,624 votes.
