The fact that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state on its blacklist is no longer news to many Nigerians. This came to light after the governor revealed his plans to relocate after handing over his mandate to Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the newly elected governor of Anambra state, on March 17, 2022.
According to reports, the EFCC wrote to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) asking notification whenever the Governor of Anambra State wishes to leave the country.
Governor Willie Obiano is currently out of the country, according to Don Adinuba of the Anambra State Commission of Information and Public Enlightenment. He was not stopped by Immigration officers when he exited the country.
The EFCC’ s inelegant decision to inform the governor that he is on their watchlist was criticised by the Anambra State Commission of Information. It appears to be unethical and unprofessional, according to Mr. Adinuba.
Apart from what Mr. Adinuba, the Anambra State Commission of Information and Public Enlightenment, has to say about the EFCC’ s notice about Governor Obiano’ s plan to relocate to the United States after his term ends, there are a lot of questions to be asked about why the EFCC would give such notice to a governor whose term is about to end.
Can we say that the anti- graft agency has discovered any abuse of public funds in the governor’ s administration and that in order to apprehend the perpetrator, the Governor’ s travel outside the nation has been restricted? If that is the case, the EFCC’ s decision is the right one.
Meanwhile, the anti- corruption agency has not made any allegations against the governor. We can only hope and wait until March of the following year, when the governor will hand over power to his successor, to learn why Gov. Obiano’ s name is on the EFCC’ s watchlist.
