It was in June 2020 that Mai Mala Buni was announced as the caretaker chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, since then the Yobe State Governor has continued to prove he could handle the job of a Governor with the leadership of his party.
Although some of Buni’ s counterparts, particularly those in the Southwest had continued to lament over the fact that the Yobe State Governor is overstaying in the office of caretaker chairman and yet to organize a national convention that will have seen him handing over leadership to a recognised NWC, however, some others think he is doing well in the capacity of caretaker chairman.
Many of those who are supporting Buni are doing so as they cited how he has lured a number of influential PDP politicians to join APC since he emerged as the caretaker chairman of APC. According to a report by Guardian Newspaper, Mai Mala Buni has been granted another 3- months extension and this might be bad news to those who want him to hand over as they might have to wait longer.
This development has found its way at a time when the Progressive Governors are pushing President Muhammadu Buhari not to accept the idea of the direct primary election being deliberated upon by the lawmakers in the NASS.
What could be the reason for Buni to get the 3 months extension as the National Caretaker Chairman of the APC?
The intraparty crisis of APC in various states is still far from being resolved, as we know political crisis can degenerate to any form and this can lead to an absolute division of the APC if the party should go ahead with its National Convention earlier stipulated for December.
This is why more time is needed to resolve the APC crisis in some states. The APC needs to put its house to avoid a chaos National Convention which is now slated to hold in February 2022 as against the earlier speculated month of December.
How is APC Governors forcing the President to reject direct primary election
Following a meeting last Sunday night held by the APC governors, the report emerged that some of the Governors were not pleased with the proposed idea of direct primary election tendered before the president by the senate.
It was gathered that Governor Buni, Governor Bagudu, and Governor Badaru had met the President to discuss the issue with him as they press for the need for Mr President to reject the idea of direct primaries.
It is conceived that the reason why the APC Governors are going against direct primary is that they have little or no influence in the decision of party members who will decide winners in any primary elections. It is now left to the President if he will succumb to this pressure or not.
