The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will entertain former President Goodluck Jonathan if he agrees to ditch the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and unite with the ruling party.
Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, the APC’ s spokesman, stated this on Channels Television on September 15, when he was a guest.
According to JoseyWrites, Akpanudoedehe stated that if the Nigerian ex- president defected, it would improve the party’ s structure.
In his own words:
” I am hearing that for the first time that we are expecting the former President. That will be great news. We will welcome him; that will also strengthen the party. ”
According to The Punch, Akpanudoedehe also stated that the party expects additional governors from the PDP to join the APC before the end of the year.
If Jonathan joins the ruling party, the APC spokesman was also questioned if Jonathan will be chosen as its presidential candidate.
In his response, Akpanudoedehe neither confirmed nor opposed it.
Rather, he claimed that the ruling party offers new members a special waiver, which includes the right to run for any political post in the country.
APC CHIEFTAIN FROM BAYELSA REACTS TO EX- PRESIDENT JONATHAN’ S ALLEGED DEFECTION
As the election for the presidency in 2023 approaches, there are rumours that the ex- president may defect from the PDP to the APC and run for the presidency.
Former All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy national press secretary Yekini Nabena has disputed reports that former President Goodluck Jonathan had joined the ruling party.
According to the Guardian, Nabena stated that the former president had not abandoned the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to JoseyWrites, the APC chairman, who originates from the same Bayelsa state as Jonathan, reaffirmed that the speculations contained no veracity.
The APC eventually responds to Jonathan’ s purported defection and confirms that he will run for president in 2023.
He stated that;
” As at the moment, there is nothing like that. If the former President decides to join the APC, it can’ t be a hidden event. We will naturally celebrate it.
” As a chieftain of the APC, I am aware that anybody who wants to join the party would start from the ward level. To the best of my knowledge as a Bayelsan, I am not aware of anything like that yet. ”
REASONS WHY APC NEEDS JONATHAN AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
Meanwhile, pundits have provided reasons why APC officials are watching former President Goodluck Jonathan see if he will abandon the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling party.
Since the APC governors’ visit to Jonathan’ s Abuja residence on the occasion of his birthday in November, led by Yobe State governor and chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni, the polity has been twitching with speculations of his possible defection to the ruling party.
This is especially true now that the APC has decided to simplify the PDP’ s structure.
In the run- up to the 2023 general elections, the ruling party has continued to recruit PDP governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and a slew of other high- ranking officials.
Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, the PDP’ s Acting National Chairman, led a delegation of party leaders from the South to the former president’ s Abuja residence last week.
There have been rumours that PDP leaders paid a visit to the former president, urging him not to defect to the APC in light of the opposition party’ s current problems.
Because APC officials agreed before the 2015 election that the party would yield its apex ticket to the South after Buhari, the South is pushing for a power transition to the region after President Muhammadu Buhari’ s term ends in 2023.
According to a reliable source in the APC who spoke with our correspondent, Jonathan was contacted to join the party and pick the party’ s presidential ticket to win the 2023 election and pass over control to the North in 2027.
” It is the northern calculation to retain power for long. But the request, the agitation for the presidential seat to be rotated to the South in 2023 is becoming louder. So they want to use Jonathan as a very soft bride to quickly cross a very long ocean.
” What I mean is that Jonathan has already done four years as president, so he would be the only candidate from the South that constitutionally is not permitted to do eight years. So what they want to do now is to use him to achieve that aim so that after governing for four years, the power will shift to the North in 2027, ” he said.
He claimed that political actors in the North felt duped since the South had occupied the State House for longer since the return to democracy in 1999.
JONATHAN’ S AIDE SPEAK ON DEFECTION RUMOUR, CALLS IT FAKE
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed rumours that he is defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Jonathan camp issued a new denial on Wednesday after reports surfaced that the Bayelsa- born politician had defected from the PDP to the APC.
There have been rumours that Jonathan will abandon the PDP in favour of the APC and run for president on the ruling party’ s platform in 2023.
The gossip mill went into overdrive on Wednesday, claiming that he had finally joined the APC, causing concern from a variety of sectors.
He went on to say that his principal is very busy with other things and that if he decides to defect, it will be announced through proper means rather than the rumour mill.
” The report is Fake News, if he defects it would be announced through the proper channels.
” This is a man that’ s very busy with other things, ” he said.
PDP DENIES DEFECTION RUMORS OF EX- PRESIDENT JONATHAN TO THE APC
In other news, the PDP has responded to reports that ex- President Jonathan has switched to the APC.
There have been rumours that the APC is courting the former president ahead of the 2023 elections.
However, the opposition party claims it has not received any official correspondence from the alleged defection of the former Nigerian president. Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP’ s national press secretary, said this on Wednesday, September 15.
Meanwhile, Mr Jonathan, a former governor of Bayelsa, served as President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, when he was defeated in his reelection bid by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr Jonathan was heavily chastised by the APC during and after his presidency for alleged corruption and incapacity to combat insecurity. Mr Jonathan was portrayed as operating a ” kindergarten” presidency by the APC, which was then an opposition party.
The opposition has accused the ex- president of being an alcoholic and has called him many other names, particularly in the run- up to the 2015 presidential election.
The former president also said in 2012 at the 52nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association that he was the world’ s most criticised president.
” I think I am the most criticised president in the whole world, ” he had said. However, Mr Jonathan said, ” I tell this noble audience that before I leave, I will also be the most praised president. “
