On the 29th of October 2022, the house of a Supreme Court Justice in Nigeria, Justice Mary Odile was raided by security operatives who claimed that they came to search her house.
This has become a controversial issue as many people have continued to question the reasons why such a noble personality in the country will be assaulted by the security operatives in the country.
Meanwhile, the Attorney general of Nigeria, Justice Abubakar Malami denied that he was not the one that gave order to the security personnel’ s to go and search Justice Mary Odile’ s house.
This issue has triggered allot of response from different people all over Nigeria and this made the Nigerian Bar Association to issue a press statement and told Malami that if he is involved in such act, he will be sanctioned from the organization.
In another development, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have said that if the Attorney General of Nigeria and the Minister of Justice Abubarkar Malami, found guilty of raiding Justice Mary Odili’ s residence in Abuja, they will sanction him.
This was contained in a press statement issued by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barrister Olumide Akpata during a press conference in Abuja on behalf of the lawyers in Nigeria.
This statement came as a response to the invasion of the house of Justice Mary Odile who is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association and the denial of the Attorney general of Nigeria, Justice Abubakar Malami who said that he know nothing about the invasion of Justice Mary Odile’ s residence in Abuja.
While interviewed by the press, Barrister Olumide Akpata said that if Malami is found guilty of raiding Justice Mary Odile’ s house, he will be sanctioned from the Nigerian Bar Association.
Continuing with his speech, he said that invasion of Justice Mary Odile’ s house is an assault to the judiciary in Nigeria and if the Attorney general was the one that issued the order that led to the invasion of Justice Mary Odile’ s house, he will be sanctioned from NBA. He said:
We reject the investigative panel set up by Malami because he has questions to answer concerning the invasion of our member, Justice Odile.
If we find out that Malami gave the instruction for the attack on Justice Odili’ s home, then he would be dragged before disciplinary committees of legal
practitioners and could lose all his rights as a lawyer
If the Attorney General is found guilty of this act of Justice Mary Odile’ s house invasion, then as a lawyer, we will take him before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee.
If he is found guilty to have given the directives that led to the invasion of the home of the Justice of the Supreme Court, then he is not fit to hold the office he occupies presently and continue to be the recipient of the privileges the profession has accorded to him.
In a similar development, he said tha if Malami is found guilty of invading the house of Jusitce Mary Odile, he can be stopped from practising law in Nigeria.
The LPPC can strip him of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and also the Body of Benchers can
reconsider his life membership of that body.
In the event that we find that any lawyer was involved in this unfortunate incident of raiding Justice Odile’ s house, that lawyer will be subjected to our disciplinary mechanisms and that lawyer will definitely face the music.
This was a press statement issued by Barrister Olamide Akpata on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Meanwhile, people have reacted over this issue and maintained that the NBA should ensure that those involved in the raiding of Justice Mary Odile’ s house should be brought to justice.
