Political warhorses are already scheming ahead of the 2023 presidential race.
Legal and illegal tactics are presently been used to eliminate political enemies. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one of the leading forces from the South-west who is interested in the presidential race of the year 2013.
It is not new for the foremost anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to be used to settle political scores. It is a strategy used by powerful government forces and it works.
The EFCC appears to be the potent tool that would be used to oppress Tinubu or also soil his image. Already, his asset declaration case with the Code of Conduct Bureau has been revived.
He has also been accused of corruption and money laundering through one of his companies, Alpha Beta.
The EFCC has also moved to clip his political wings by going after his allies. Babatunde Fowler, the disgraced former chairman of the FIRS has been grilled severally by the EFCC and some missing billions have been linked to him.
His closeness with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has also put the pastor at risk. Earlier rumours had it that the VP was fingered in the movement of slush funds, but no concrete proof has been tendered.
As if that was not enough, Babatunde Fashola, a top-tier member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, has been interrogated by the EFCC over corrupt practices.
He was called in for questioning after detectives were tipped off about his involvement in Mr Fowler’s loot during his days as the head of Lagos Inland Revenue Service and most recently at the FIRS. Mr Fashola strongly denied all charges of corruption as presented to him by the EFCC, urging officials to ensure a thorough investigation of the matter before dragging his name into it.
The Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami is rumoured to be the brain behind the political machination against Tinubu and his allies.
The heat on these politicians is expected to be increased as the election draws closer. Expect to see the names of Tinubu, Fashola, Fowler, Osinbajo and other friends of the Jagaban of Borgu linked to corruption cases.
Do you think Tinubu will be forced to abandon his presidential ambition?
Can he survive this fierce political storm?
