The Europa league final between 5- time winners Sevilla and Italian heavyweights Inter Milan lived up to it’s pre-match billing as Sevilla defeated Inter Milan by 3- 2 to crown their 2019/20 herculean effort with a hotly contested and wholly deserved Euopean title win.
Sevilla came into this final as the most successful team in the competition’s history by holding the record for the most victories ,after having won the competition five times since its inception while the Italian heavyweights ,Inter Milan came into the crunch game with a 10 game winning streak with their 5-0 semifinal demolition of Shaktar Donetsk a fearsome reminder of their attacking prowess.
As early as the 3rd minute, Sevilla conceded a penalty from a Diego Carlos last ditch tackle on Inter’s striker Romelu Lukaku and were immediately punished as the ex- Manchester United striker duly dispatched from the spot to give the Italian side an early lead. The Spanish side quickly regrouped as they strung passes after passes seeking to break through Inter’s defence to restore parity and they were duly rewarded as a good team-move resulted in an equalizer by Luuk De jong from a precise Jesus Navas cross ,making the scores 1-1.
With twelve minutes to the end of the first half, the game sparked to life once more as at first Sevilla took the lead for the first time in the fierely contested encouter through another Luuk de jong header and as the Spanish side were savouring being in the ascendency, the Italian side hit back immediately through an unlikely source with the Legendary Uruguayan defender Diego Godin converting a powerful header to take the scores level at 2-2.
In the 65th minute, Romelu lukaku had an opportinity to give Inter Milan the lead once more but was stopped by a fantastic save from Bono, the Sevilla goalkeeper as the game became an even tense affair. That tense affair set the stage for an inevitable finale as in the 75th minute ,the Spanish side went into the lead once again through an own goal by ironically Inter Milan’s prolific striker Lukaku as he tried unsuccessfully to clear a Diego Carlos acrobatic effort, taking the score to 3-2 I’m Sevilla’s favour.
Tried as they did ,the Italian giants couldn’t get back into the game and the Spanish side cemented their dominance over the competition as they lifted it for the sixth time with the game ending 3-2 in Sevilla’s favour.
