Boko Haram insurgents ambushed the Operation Hadan Kai forces in Rann, Borno State’ s Kala Balge Local Government Area, on Friday, killing ten of them in a vicious fire battle.
Yahaya, the 22nd army chief, was the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadan Kai, the military operation fighting the decade- long insurgency in the North- East, prior to his appointment.
As the number of casualties reported had yet to be verified, SaharaReporters learned that the terrorists stormed the town and then the military base in numerous weapons trucks.
Brig- Gen Mohammed Yerima, the Director of Army Public Relations, acknowledged the attack and stated that ten terrorists were killed.
He remained mute, though, regarding the troops’ casualties.
” Boko Haram terrorists tried an audacious attack on troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge LGA in Borno State, barely hours into the tenure of the Chief of Army Staff, Gen Faruk Yahaya, ” he added.
” The terrorists arrived in force, mounted on gun trucks, and sought to infiltrate the town’ s main gate. The high- octane forces were quick to respond and dealt a humiliating defeat to the terrorists, who abandoned their nefarious objective and fled.
” The forces pursued the fleeing terrorist and guaranteed that the town and its citizens were no longer in danger. One of the gun trucks was effectively destroyed, and various weapons were recovered, including one anti- aircraft gun, two machine guns, and eight AK- 47 rifles, neutralizing ten terrorists in the process. ”
