BREAKING! ! ! Repay N1. 4B Gifted To Niger Republic, In The Midst Of Our Problems- SERAP Urges Buhari
The Socio- Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has demanded an immediate refund of the N1. 14 billion given to the Niger Republic by President Muhammadu Buhari for the purchase of official vehicles.
SERAP Issued The Demand
Minister of Finance Zainab Ahmed confirmed that the federal government authorized N1. 14 billion for the delivery of ten Toyota Land Cruiser V8 vehicles to the Republic of Niger.
The Minister asserted that Nigeria has always provided such assistance to neighboring nations, including Chad, Cameroon, and others. She had stated that President Muhammadu Buhari reserved the right to act in the national interest.
In her words, ” Nigeria has had to support its neighbours, especially the immediate neighbours, to enhance their capacity to secure their countries as it relates to us. This is not the first time that Nigeria has assisted the Niger Republic, Cameroon or Chad. ”
However, Nigerians disapprove of the disbursement of funds in the midst of the nation’ s crises, such as the nearly six- month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues requiring immediate attention.
SERAP tweeted, ” The Buhari administration must immediately ask Niger Republic authorities to refund the N1. 14 billion approved for them to buy vehicles, and use the money to offset the funding for ASUU, so those poor children can go back to school” .
