At last, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of the 10 billion Naira needed for the rehabilitation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), ENugu, runway.
He announced this on his twitter handle after a meeting with Southeast governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and representatives of Nzuko Umunna who visited him on the Airport closure.
I have approved the sum of 10 billion Naira for an Intervention fund for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. I have the assurance of the Minister of Aviation that the work will be done speedily and to the highest standards.

Reacting to the development, our correspondent, Mr. Charles Ogbu said:
“Please, don’t rejoice yet. Let us see the work first because with the dishonest manner the Buhari government has handled this Enugu Airport issue so far, it will be foolish to believe anything they say without seeing it done.
“I sat face to face with the Aviation Minister in a closed door meeting with the Southeast Governors Forum in Enugu and I heard him make so many promises.
“Over a month after, none of those promises has been fulfilled. A senior official of Aviation Ministry even fed me false information about the Airport.
“If I wasn’t smart enough to travel to the Airport and even Owerri Airport to verify his info, I wouldn’t have discovered he lied.
“Bottom line is, don’t heave a sigh of relief yet. These people are fundamentally insincere. I know this for a fact.
“Once I confirm that the Contractor has started work, I will release the names of Southeast people appointed to monitor the quality of work.
“This is very important because if the people who monitored this same P.W. construction Firm when the runway was done the first time didn’t connive with the Firm to do a very horrible job, we wouldn’t be having this conversation now.”
