Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has become a thorn in the flesh of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last 5 years. Nnamdi Kanu has been bombarding Buhari with vicious media attacks.
He has made many people believe Buhari is dead and that the present Nigerian leader is a body double named Jubril Al Sudani from Sudan. He has also been fanning the embers of division in Nigeria by speaking against the Fulanis, a major tribe the president hails from.
Kanu, 53, isn’t stopping anytime soon and his activities are threats to the internal security and threat to the sovereignty of the Nigerian state. Of late, he established the Eastern Security Network which allegedly engaged the Nigerian army in a shoot-out in Orlu, Imo State, thereby leaving many dead.
Kanu who is a British citizen hides away in the United Kingdom. He was facing trial for treasonable felony and terrorism in Nigeria before he broke his bail conditions and ran off. He feels he is out of the reach of the law but it is a fallacious belief and false sense of security.
Buhari can clip the wings of Kanu by demanding his extradition from the United Kingdom. Extradition between the UK and Nigeria is facilitated by a multilateral treaty, “The London Scheme for Extradition within the Commonwealth”. The government might write to the UK to arrest Kanu, detain him and prepare him for extradition back to Nigeria to face trial for the old offences and also the new ones.
If the extradition move is started with Kanu placed on the INTERPOL Red Alert, so that he will not be able to leave the UK, he will feel cornered and forced to exercise restraints. He knows his life will be in danger in Nigeria and Buhari will pay him back for his sins against him. Remember Kanu also demanded the head of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State after the Oyigbo council area crisis.
With this singular move, Kanu will be on his knees begging Buhari for mercy and an end will be brought to his media onslaught against Buhari and Nigeria as a whole.
