Most Nigerians don’t know the difference between the National Identification Number (NIN) and the National ID card.

Most of you might not be aware of the facts that the two cards have a difference and performs different functions.

The difference between the National identification number and the National Identity Card can be seen below.

What is National Identification Number (NIN)?

National identification number is eleven digits given to an individual upon successful registration.

The National identification number is used to connect all information about an individual and is also used to verify one’s identity.

While the National Electronics Identity Card is a chip-based card that comes next after the eleven digits NIN have been obtained or after a successful registration into the national identity system.

Unlike NIN that can be assignable to all Legal residents without age limitations, the National Electronics identity card can only be discharged to Nigerians and legal residents above 16 years, that are registered into the National Identity System

Take note. The eleven digits NIN (national Identification Number) are not the same thing as the National Electronics Identity card which is a physical token.

Below are the functions of National Identity card.

  1. It has E-health Application that can be used by cardholders to administer their health insurance schemes, storing of special code containing the cardholder’s health status.

  2. E-voting Application on the e-ID card would enable it to serve as the cardholder’s voter card during elections.

  3. It has SIM Application that securely stores the international mobile subscriber identity and the key used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile phone devices. The SIM application functions are identical to the SIM used in a mobile phone.

National Electronics Identity Card has more functions such as E-taxation Application that can be used as a self-payment for tax, from the comfort of your home. E-transport application, E-insurance Application, etc.
