The apex court had ruled that following the disqualification of the running mate of David Lyon for presentation of forged certificate to Independent National Electoral Commission, their joint ticket is equally nullified. As such, the next candidate with the highest vote should be declared winner of the election by INEC.
Following this, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party is expected to sworn in as governor of Bayelsa state by tomorrow.
The National Chairman of APC has argued that the PDP’s candidate did not meet the legal requirement to be sworn in as the governor and as such, Bayelsa state will be without a governor until a rerun is conducted by INEC.
He cited a similar case which occurred in Bauchi state in 1999 elections and the supreme court called for a rerun as a result of no candidate meeting the legal requirement to be sworn in as governor.
If his side of the argument is argeed by INEC, then the speaker of the Bayelsa house of assembly may be sworn in tomorrow as acting governor pending when the rerun is conducted by INEC.
But if INEC goes with the ruling of the apex court then the candidate of PDP will be sworn in as Governor.
Everyone awaits INEC decision as the confusion rages on.
