Creation Of New Constituency Seats Will Require Constitutional Amendment – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that any attempt to alter or create additional state constituency seats in most states of the federation may require constitutional amendment.

Barrister Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee disclosed this in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.

He pointed out that the status of majority of states with regards to creation of new state constituencies require input from the National Assembly and declared readiness of the commission to engage the lawmakers for more clarification.

Okoye was clarifying the constitutional role of the commission vis-a-vis reports in media outlets about what INEC’s responsibilities are with regards to the division, revision and adjustment of electoral constituencies.
