DISAPPOINTING: Why Reno Omokri’s Suggestion Of Amnesty For IPOB Members Is Invalid

Reno Omokri, aide to former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has released a statement on Twitter saying that the Igbo elders that petitioned President Buhari for Nnamdi Kanu’ s release, should have asked him to grant amnesty to IPOB members, instead, coupled with rehabilitation. He based his reasoning on the fact that such is being done for Boko Haram members in the north. He also argued that the request would serve as a test for Buhari’ s sense of fairness.

However, this assertion by Reno Omokri is not quite on point. The reason for this is that, the amnesty being granted to Boko Haram terrorists, as controversial as it is, is reserved solely for those that agree to lay down their arms and surrender. IPOB members can not be said to be considering the option of surrender, hence granting them amnesty is simply not on the table at this point.

Granting amnesty to IPOB militants will require them to renounce their cause, which is the attainment of the Republic of Biafra, similar to the way Boko Haram terrorists renounce terrorism and surrender themselves for reformation. There will be no point in forgiving IPOB militants unconditionally, if they will still continue down their chosen path.

Additionally, amnesty has long been part of the government’ s method of dealing with insurgency. The Nigerian military employs both kinetic and non- kinetic tactics in their efforts to stop terrorism. What this means is that they use both deadly force and non- violent means in the fight against terrorism. This is why the controversial Operation Safe Corridor program was established to rehabilitate repentant Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists and encourage defection from their camps.

On the part of the bandits, the minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, once revealed that the option of surrender and rehabilitation is open to the criminals, if they choose to drop their weapons and come forward. Going by these examples, it stands to reason that the same can be applied to IPOB in regard to an amnesty deal. Before Reno Omokri brought up his suggestion, he should have questioned whether or not the secessionists are actually willing to give up their fight.
