A young man named Olaoye Abayomi died prematurely after a team of drunken police officers opened fire on the guests on Saturday night in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Abayomi was with his friend Idris Adebayo at the Queens Court Hotel on the Ado Ikere-Route when the police officers, together with a retired Deputy Inspector General of the Police, arrived on the scene with a vehicle bearing the number plate “PF 600 – WSH” and misbehaved while under the influence of alcohol.
They threatened to kill some of the guests and suddenly opened fire.
Abayomi was hit by a stray bullet which killed him on the spot.
The event caused a great uproar in the area and forced the guests to seek shelter, while those who suffered gunshot wounds were taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.
The spokesman for the State Police, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and added that the command had launched an investigation into the matter.
He said that the police officers involved in the shooting had been arrested and detained at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti.
