Indigenes of Ebonyi State have blamed Governor David Umahi after suspected Fulani herdsmen killed over 25 persons in Egedegede Community, in Ishielu Local Government Area of the State.
The incident, THE PARADISE NEWS learned took place on Monday evening, when the herdsmen subtly attacked the community at night.
Sources said over 25 persons were killed including a priest in the Methodist Church, whose car was also burnt to ashes. “Our village was attacked on Monday evening by Fulani herdsmen who burnt over five motorcycles, three farmlands and houses. They machete our people and slaughtered our animals. We counted 25 people that were killed as of yesterday (Tuesday) and littered all over the community”, a resident told THE PARADISE NEWS.
However, the people of Ebonyi have blamed the Governor for the killings, saying his selfish presidential ambition for 2023 is what is killing his people today.
“A community in Ebonyi state was attacked by Fulani herdsmen and houses set on fire. Umahi’s hands are tied, he is hanging on, waiting for the blessings of his father Buhari for a SE ticket…the price for politics at your people’s detriment”, a Twitter user, @theonly1acre tweeted.
Another @MistaChika said: “There have been a lot of killings by AK-47 carrying Fulani herdsmen in Ebonyi state and so many have gone unreported. Dave Umahi is more interested in his presidential ambition and must prove his loyalty to his godfather by doing nothing about it. There is a big problem”.
“Umahi is twerking in hope for a Presidential ticket that may not come while they butcher his people He reportedly gives them Ebonyi land for RUGA but it’s not enough. These people came to conquer, may we not realise it too late Ask them in Jos and Illorin”, @The042Network tweeted.
“Herdsmen just welcomed Gov Dave Umahi to APC with the killing of over 50 people in Ebonyi. He who dines with the devil uses a long spoon! RIP to the deceased”, Okeydegeneral tweeted.
Dr Joe Aba, a political economist who also condemned the killings said: “I woke up this morning to reports that several people have been killed in Ebonyi State by AK47-wielding herdsmen. I condemn these killings in the strongest possible terms. Such brazen terrorism should not be possible in a functional country. Such impunity should not be possible”.
The Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Eze and Ebonyi State Commissioner for Business Development, Dr Stephen Odo, who hails from the local government, Tuesday led a team of security agents to the communities and condoled with the bereaved families.
The delegation assured them that the state government would investigate the invasion.
The Police also through the Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed that scores of persons were killed in the reprisal attacked.
She said: “The commissioner of police delegated a team of policemen for on-the-spot assessment because of peace talks going on in the town. So, the commissioner of police delegated them; deputy commissioner of police in charge of Operations and others went for an on-the-spot assessment to enable us to get the detail of the report. So, they are yet to come back.
“We are still waiting for our men to come back to tell us their findings. I am already preparing a press release on the incident but their report too will assist us in giving you detailed information about it”, Odah added.
The state Governor, Chief David Umahi, accompanied by his deputy, Mr Kelechi Igwe, and security chiefs in the state have also visited the area.
