The European Union has opened applications for next year’s Erasmus+ scholarship programme in commitment to expand higher education opportunities for Nigeria’s youth.

The Erasmus+ is the EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport, offering beneficiaries scholarships for young people to continue their studies in some of the most prestigious universities in Europe and overseas. It also gives youths, students, staff and higher education institutes to attend or work with European Higher Education Institutions.

Following the success of the programme in the period between 2014 to 2020, the Erasmus+ programme for 2021 to 2027 opens more opportunities for mobility and cooperation with partner countries beyond Europe.

The programme equips young Nigerians with the education, skills and competencies they need to thrive in a globalised economy, thus, contributing to nation-building. The 2021-2027 programme focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life.

This year, a total of 134 Nigerians were awarded an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree scholarship.

Among African countries, Nigeria has the most accepted students for the programme. Nigeria is up there with Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Mexico and Pakistan as the top six nations with the most awardees.

The EU urges Nigerians and Nigerian Higher Education Institutes to take advantage of the provided opportunities for investment in knowledge, skills and competencies.

Interested Nigerians can check the EU’s social media handles for detailed information on how to apply for the scholarship programme for next year.
