Every summer, former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama releases a playlist featuring some of the songs he is currently loving on and which he has kept on a loop.
It can be recalled that this playlist featured fast-rising Nigerian music star, Rema, in 2019. Rema who was only 19-years-old then had his single, ‘Iron Man’ as number 42 on the playlist.

While Rema was the only one representing Nigeria on the list as at then, this year sees a much heavier representation of Nigerian artistes. The big three as they are commonly referred to in Nigerian music; Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy, have songs or features on the ex-President’s 2020 summer playlist.
On Twitter, Obama wrote: “Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to music with my family. I wanted to share some of my favorites from the summer—including songs from some of the artists at this week’s @DemConvention. Hope you enjoy it.”
Another exciting Nigerian on this playlist is equally fast-rising ‘Try Me’ crooner, Tems. American singer, Khalid’s single, ‘Know Your Worth’ which features Tems and Davido on its remix comes up on the playlist.
For Burna Boy, it is his collaboration on Jorja Smith’s single, ‘Be Honest’ that is featured. Wizkid, however, appears to be the only one of the trio to have his own song on the playlist. His single, ‘Smile’ featuring H.E.R. is also included on the playlist.

These inclusions are definitely another huge win for Nigerian music and the Afrobeat genre in general. It is also indicative of the fact that the Obama family has got some great taste in music.
As Africa continues to celebrate the brilliance of Burna Boy’s recently released fifth studio album, ‘Twice As Tall’, music lovers all over the world would also be anticipating album projects from Wizkid and Davido.
There is no denying the fact that this year is already a blessed one for music in Africa. What are your thoughts on Obama’s endorsement of Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy?
