The Enugu State Government has stated that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has no plans to defect from the People Democratic Party PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC as suggested by former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani- Kayode.
When Fani- Kayode joined the APC on Wednesday, he said Ugwanyi was one among the governors he had been talking to about leaving the PDP for the ruling party.
Dr. Josef Onoh, the chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), responded to the allegations by calling Fani- remarks Kayode’ s a ” figment of his imagination” when speaking to journalists in Enugu on Saturday.
He reiterated that Ugwuanyi had no intention of abandoning the PDP.
Onoh stated that anyone who doubted Ugwuanyi’ s steady and fearless character should look at the Southern Governors’ meeting in Enugu last Thursday when Ugwuanyi was the only Governor from the Southeast area there.
” What Femi Fani- Kayode said was his personal opinion; it did not reflect the government, the state, or the current state of affairs of the PDP and our governor in Enugu State.
” Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is the leader of the PDP in the Southeast, he has just been made the National Chairman of PDP zoning committee and that shows the level of confidence the PDP as a party has in him.
” It’ s like suggesting that the President of Nigeria assume a position as a ward councilor. We accept Fani- decision Kayode’ s to join the APC, but there are persons of integrity and honor in this game.
” I can tell you with authority, not only as a Governor’ s buddy, that the long- running rumor of Ugwuanyi joining the APC is incorrect. In the words of Obasanjo, Ifeanyi Ugwuany, we still dey kamkpe in PDP” , he explained.
Onoh praised the role of opposing political parties in democracies, saying that there can be no thriving democracy without opposition, which must monitor the fairness and political engagement.
” We in the PDP are in opposition here in Enugu State, but we respect and accommodate the APC and other political parties. The problem is that Femi Fani- Kayode conflates Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’ s approach to politics with the barbaric norm played by some Nigerian politicians.
” Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is the Governor of Enugu State, which makes him the state’ s chief security official and the father of all political parties in the state. He has the authority to revoke the land on which any political party’ s office is located, yet he ensures that everyone is safe.
” So whatever Femi Fani- Kayode said is a figment of his imagination and I want members of the general public to know that” , he said.
