While President Muhammadu Buhari is busy fighting crime at all levels including the arrest of the leaders of the two major secession groups in the country, Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho, some people see it as a misplaced priority.
The President in one of his speeches vowed to speak to those disturbing the peace of this nation in the language they understand and he has done that to Kanu and Igboho.
In this article, we are going to take a look at people’ s views on the action taken against Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho by President Buhari and the way forward as regards their matter.
Festus Ogun Explains Why Buhari Subdued Nnamdi Kanu And Sunday Igboho
Festus Ogun, a lawyer slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for directing Nigerian security forces to apprehend Biafra and Yoruba Nation agitators Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho.
Due to his administration’ s failure in security and battling terrorism, the human rights activist accused Buhari of looking elsewhere in an interview with DAILY POST.
Ogun referred to the secessionists’ arrest as ” glaringly shame” when compared to the operations of killer herdsmen, bandits, and terrorists.
Even the President’ s 101- paragraph speech on October 1 addressed the Kanu- Igboho issue, according to Festus Ogun Legal’ s Principal Partner, with less mention of insurgents and terror organizations.
” One would think that, after going to such lengths to confront the unjust and indiscriminate crackdown on Igboho and Kanu, the President would extend his strong comments to the illegal activities of terror groups holding our country’ s peace hostage.
” It disturbs and makes me suspicious. Would the President’ s silence confirm worries that he sympathizes with terrorists? Or was it simply a costly oversight?
” Many Nigerians would be tempted to vote for the former President because of the President’ s great love and admiration for Fulani herdsmen and terrorists, which he has exhibited in words and acts over the years.
” I believe this is a risky route that could exacerbate whatever remains of our country’ s shaky structure, ” Ogun cautioned.
The Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja is holding Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The trial of the founder of Radio Biafra will resume this month at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu’ s legal team had applied for his transfer to Kuje Prison, but it had been denied by Justice Binta Nyako.
Kanu was returned to Nigeria by the Nigerian government in June, just days after he was apprehended in Kenya. He had jumped bail in Nigeria years after government forces attacked his family home and killed associates.
Also, Sunday Igboho was apprehended at Cotonou’ s Cadjèhoun Airport in July, just before his scheduled travel to Europe.
After being declared wanted for stockpiling weaponry and threatening to conduct war against the state, the Yoruba Nation agitator escaped Nigeria.
When Igboho boasted to community leaders that he could buy weaponry for them to fight Fulani herders, he played right into the hands of the government. The remark was taped and shared on social media.
Salihu Abdulkadir, the Sarkin Fulani of Igangan, and his kinsmen were chased out by Igboho in January 2021 for reportedly arranging the kidnapping and murder of scores of Yoruba people. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo, immediately ordered his arrest.
Igboho once threatened that if the government dispatched 1, 000 police officers to confront him, only 100 would return alive, as evidenced on videotape. His trial is still ongoing in Benin Republic’ s Cour De’ appal De Cotonou.
Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court ordered the DSS to pay N20 billion to Igboho in September.
The fine is for the damage done to Igboho’ s Soka residence in Ibadan by agents on July 1. There was a stash of weapons and ammunition discovered.
Deal Decisively With Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho, And Their Sponsors- AYCF
President Muhammadu Buhari’ s pledge to deal aggressively with separatist agitators and their sponsors has been backed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF).
The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, as well as the ongoing investigations, have revealed certain high- profile funders behind these individuals according to Buhari.
” We are investigating these funders aggressively, including one who has been recognized as a member of the National Assembly” , he said.
The AYCF responded by saying that those pushing for Nigeria’ s breakup should be dealt with harshly.
The AYCF national president, Yerima Shettima, told journalists that individuals whose agitations jeopardize the lives of Nigerians should be dealt with following Buhari’ s directive.
Nnamdi Kanu, he said, is a blind guy guiding IPOB into a death trap.
In his criticism of IPOB’ s violent tactics, Shettima noted the fact that the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) conducts its agitation in a peaceful manner and without endangering the lives of Nigerian citizens.
As Shettima points out that we are all victims of society today in one way or another, so if anything goes wrong, you don’ t have to respond inappropriately. When you look at the situation on the ground and believe that the only way out is to resort to violence at the expense of other people’ s lives, such agitation isn’ t worth the effort.
Dr. Kayode Ajulo Believes That Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu, And Others Deserve Amnesty
In a call to President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, a renowned constitutional lawyer and civil rights activist, pleaded with the Nigerian leader to forgive agitators, repentant terrorists, and bandits battling the government.
Ajulo appealed in a statement posted in Lagos, which was titled ” A Plea of Amnesty for Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu, and Other Political Prisoners. ”
According to him, the President should consider amnesty to be an issue of fundamental national importance in his administration.
” President Muhammadu Buhari, the father of the nation, is urged to forgive agitators, repentant terrorists, and bandits who have taken up arms against the state as a matter of fundamental national importance, and I sincerely encourage and appeal to him on this topic” , he said.
