Ace Nigerian Journalist, Babajide Kolade Otitoju, You may have heard that violence broke out in Awo Mmamma in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State after gunmen murdered a military officer in the area. Efforts have since been undertaken to bring peace to the affected areas.
In retaliation, soldiers regrouped, stormed the community and allegedly burned a hotel, cars, houses and shops.
The incident at the Ishieke junction in the region provoked panic in the community.
Numerous natives of the community fled while soldiers took control of the community.
According to a source, he said that ” some hoodlums attacked some soldiers at Ishieke junction in Awo Mmamma and killed one of them. They zoomed off towards Ihiala in Anambra State. Later soldiers invaded the area and caused havoc in the area by setting a hotel, cars, houses and stalls on fire. ”
Speaking concerning the incident, Babajide Kolade- Otitoju said, ” the soldier got murdered while he was directing traffic in the area. Some of these criminals attack uniform men on sight. The attacks against uniformed men in the state are usually unprovoked. ”
He further stated that ” The attacks are more frequent in Imo state. Previously, soldiers have been attacked in Oru, Orsu and Orlu areas. It is painful that, as usual, innocent people in the area bore the consequences of the incident. ”
He further explained that ” the people in the region do not support the activities of these criminals. Many Igbo leaders oppose the criminal activities of these armed groups. ”
” However, you will lose the support of the people if you keep burning the houses of innocent people. “
