Foamy Urine: The Symptom You Should Pay Attention To

Have you ever looked back after using the restroom to see how your urine looks? Yeah, we’ve all done it, but what do you do if your urine appears to be foamy? Have you ever considered it? You’re not the only one who thinks this way. However, it turns out that foamy urine is something to which we must pay careful attention.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s common to have low levels of protein in your urine as part of the waste process, but some factors can cause it to spike enough to cause foamy pee. If you’re dehydrated, for example, you could find a foamy pee situation.

Urine should be transparent with a yellowish appearance and no blood or foam. Foam, on the other hand, is not the same as bubbles.

Protein in the urine causes foamy urine, which is not normal. “The protein is filtered by the kidneys, but it should be kept in the body,” Dr. Ghossein explains. The kidneys are not functioning properly if they are releasing protein into the urine. This can be caused by a variety of diseases that specifically affect the kidneys, such as lupus or diabetes, but it can also be a symptom of a medical condition that affects other body systems.

Dr. Ghossein advises calling your primary care physician if you find foam in your urine. A simple urine test will determine whether and how much protein is present in your urine. Your doctor can refer you to a specialist for additional testing and treatment based on the results of these tests, your medical history, and a thorough examination, she says.

Foamy urine, when combined with swollen legs and swelling around the eyes, can signal a serious medical condition, such as the ones mentioned below:

Kidney disease: is a condition that affects the kidneys foamy urine is a symptom of kidney disease. Filtration of proteins in the blood is one of the kidneys’ most significant functions. These proteins play important roles in the body, such as maintaining fluid equilibrium. Proteins can leak from the kidneys into the urine if a person has kidney damage or disease. Proteinuria, which means “protein in the urine,” is the result. Extra proteins lower the surface tension of urine, allowing it to foam. This is analogous to the way soap affects water. Proteinuria may be a symptom of kidney disease in its early stages. Other signs and symptoms may include:

  • itchy skin

  • nausea

  • shortness of breath

  • swelling

  • unexplained fatigue

  • frequent urination

  • vomiting

Diabetes: is a disease that affects people foamy urine is a common symptom of diabetes and other forms of elevated blood sugar. Blood glucose molecules in the body of a person with uncontrolled diabetes would be higher. Glucose, like protein, is a big molecule. The kidneys can have difficulty filtering the molecules correctly if blood glucose levels are too high. As a consequence, the kidneys can release excess glucose and proteins into the urine. People with uncontrolled diabetes may experience a variety of symptoms in addition to foamy urine, including:

  • blurred vision

  • dry mouth

  • a constant feeling of thirst

  • a frequent need to go to the bathroom

  • unexplained hunger

  • itchy skin

  • unexplained fatigue

One factor that can give a “false positive” for too much protein in your urine may be UTI medicine. The best way to successfully treat a urinary tract infection is to see your doctor and get on antibiotics, the Mayo Clinic explains. However, there are drugs like Azo, which contains the active ingredient phenazopyridine hydrochloride, that can help alleviate UTI symptoms while the infection heals. While phenazopyridine hydrochloride is best known for causing orange pee, it may also cause foamy urine in some people.

Take a look back the next time you do “number 1” to see what your pee looks like. It will give you a lot of information about what’s going on with and inside your body.
