The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who was arrested by the government last month in Kenya is currently in custody awaiting his trial. However, his lawyer has raised the alarm that he is suffering from an ailment called an enlarged heart. Some people suffering from heart conditions may experience mild symptoms like irregular heartbeats while others suffer severe symptoms like dizziness and shortness of breath.
The condition is usually caused by other severe underlying heart problems that makes the heart to work harder than normal thereby enlarging the muscles of the heart.
Four Causes of an enlarged heart
1 Short term stress
According to Mayo Clinic, subjecting the body to short term stress like pregnancy and hard labor may lead to an enlarged heart. The muscles of the heart are forced to pump more blood than normally required and this can lead to an enlargement of the walls of the heart.
2 High blood pressure
When the diastolic and systolic rhythms of the heart is faster than normal, a patient is said to have a high blood pressure. This could lead to an enlarged heart in the long term.
Mayo Clinic claims that high blood pressure could lead to an enlargement of the left ventricle and the upper chambers of the heart.
3 Blocked arteries in your heart
When fatty substances block the arteries, they obstruct blood flow through your heart vessels. Continuous obstruction of the flow of blood may lead to a heart attack. When a patient suffers from a heart attack, a section of their heart dies. When this happens, your heart has to work harder to pump blood to the rest of the body, causing it to enlarge.
According to betterhealth.com, When a patient carries too much body fat, it leads to high blood pressure and this in turn leads to an enlarged heart.
