There are series of clamor on the internet for the release and employment of a suspected arms manufacturer arrested in Akwa Ibom by the operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command yesterday.
According to the spokesperson of the command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Odiko MacDon, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, September 14, said the suspect whose name is given as Ekike Hector David is a welder man who specializes in manufacturing locally made firearm like Ak47, Dane Guns, Pistol, and Revolvers Guns, etc.
” On the 13th of September, 2021, at about 1 pm, Surveillance Team of ‘ A’ Division located at Barracks Road, while on routine stop and search operation to stem criminal activities along Uyo Village Road and environs, arrested one Ekike Hector David of Mbiokporo 1 in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area with eight locally fabricated AK47 Rifles, one (1) Pump Action, one (1) pistol, and six (6) Dane Guns, ” the statement reads.
” Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a welder who specializes in making and selling locally made Rifles and other types of guns to criminal elements who use the same in terrorizing innocent members of the public. ”
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Amiegheme Andy has therefore ordered an investigation to arrest those who patronized the suspect and other co-conspirators in the illicit business. This according to him is to serve as a deterrent to an intending arms manufacturer out there who might want to engage in such a deadly business.
Meanwhile, Nigerians are kicking on the internet since the news broke out yesterday. Some people said the welder should be employed instead of the arrest and prosecutions. They believed it is a rare talent to see someone who can manufacture an AK47 locally using the local tools. So the suspect should be encouraged not arrest.
Below are some of their different reactions clamoring for the release and employment of the suspect.
