INSECURITY: Islamic Cleric Sheikh Gumi Speaks, Names Prominent Nigerians To Blame For Insecurity

The spite of insecurity plaguing the nation Nigeria has gotten to heights that many never imagined could get to. There are reports almost on daily basis on the news media of one attack, kidnapping, killing, abduction or the other, and this cuts across the majority of the regions of the country.

Before now, the Northern region seemed to be at the main receiving end of the nation’s dilapidated security situation with repeated attacks by Boko Haram, bandits, cattle rustlers, ISWAP and so on, but the decay in the security situation has spread to the South Western and South-Eastern regions of the nation, with only South-Southern region of the nation currently spared of significant crisis.

Amid the current security challenges being faced in the nation, many actors and voices have been birthed, one of whom is the now very popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi.

Sheikh Gumi rose to notoriety after he successful championed negotiations with various bandit groups after different attacks by the said group, securing the payment of ransoms for the bandits and in most cases, being instrumental to the release of persons abducted.

The cleric has also in different times and occasions lent his voice regarding the situation in the country, and one of such occasions, following the outcry for the resignation or sacking of his fellow sheikh, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Federal Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, when sheikh Gumi told Nigerians that if Pantami were to lose his job, that Nigerians would regret it.

In yet another of his statement made this morning, sheikh Gumi said that the current security situation caused by the rise in banditry in the country was both the fault of the current administration of President Buhari and the past administrations of Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Yar’Adua, Olusegun Obasanjo, and others.

According to reportage from Daily Post, the controversial Islamic cleric said that previous administrations have long-neglected and marginalized herdsmen, and the complete lack of show of interest in the plight of herdsmen, were the seeds that were planted, that has now brought about the harvest of insecurity being experienced in the form of widespread banditry.

In his words, the sheikh said; “I blame all the previous governments”, adding that most bandits know that security agents are on their trails, so they are in a hurry to cash in on their terror career and make more money while the window is still available, attributing this rush to make money to the reason for the increased cases of abductions and ransom demands.

The sheikh reiterated that most of the bandits that he had led negotiations with have laid down their arms and are looking forward to resuming negotiations.

Should Gumi be appointed by the Federal Government of Nigeria to fully and officially champion the discussion with the people that have killed and destroyed the properties of Nigerians?

What is Nigeria’s strategy for engaging terrorist, bandits, criminal elements, etc?

Are the likes of Jonathan, Yar’Adua, and Obasanjo to blame for the insecurity in the nation as claimed by sheikh Gumi?
