Twelve corpses of the 102 kept in the Department of Anatomy at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, were in the early hours of Tuesday burnt to ashes in a fire outbreak that gutted the department.

It was gathered that the inferno started at the department around 3 a.m. on Tuesday due to electricity surge which affected a section of the morgue where corpses were kept.

The fire was quickly put off by combined efforts of the security and fire services unit of the university thus averting what could have resulted to a major fire outbreak in the university.

A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Osogbo confirmed the fire outbreak stating that the fire started around 3 a.m.

It said out of about 102 bodies that were kept in the morgue, 12 were affected by the fire.

Accordingly, the Department has made detailed arrangements to duly and adequately inform those who kept their dead ones in the morgue.

Leading other Principal Officers to the scene of the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, assessed the level of damage and instructed immediate repairs to the affected areas.

The Vice-Chancellor has also constituted a three-member committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the fire outbreak.

As at the time of filling this report, normalcy had returned to the school as academic and administrative activities have since commenced.
