At least 36 people are drowned after a boat sank on the Congo river. The vessel, which was travelling to Democratic Republic of Congo capital from Mai Ndombe province, went down overnight on Sunday.
According to the Police, 76 passengers were rescued from the whaleboat – a flat bottomed vessel used to transport people on lakes and rivers.
The cause of the accident is still unknown, but accidents are common, often caused by overloading and the unsafe state of vessels. Many passengers are not equipped with life jackets and many cannot swim.
Lake and river transport is widely used in Democratic Republic of Congo as means of transport because of poor road network system and maintenance.
