The Government of Kogi State under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello, has affirmed an onslaught on the State’ s correctional facility.
The information Commissioner in the State, Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed that security operatives had rearrested some of the escaped inmates.
The correctional centre was attacked by some unidentified armed men in the early hours of Monday with two soldiers killed in the operation.
Many prisoners reportedly escaped from the facility.
But in a press statement released by Fanwo, some of the prisoners reportedly came back voluntarily.
The information commissioner pleaded with the people of Kogi State to assist with information that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the evil act.
He revealed that investigations were still ongoing to ascertain the number of prisoners that actually escaped.
Fanwo stressed that efforts were being intensified to make sure they re- arrested the fugitive prisoners.
According to his statement: ” We can confirm that some gunmen attacked the Kabba Custodial Centre but investigations are still on to clearly ascertain the number of inmates that escaped from the centre. We also lost two security operatives.
” The state security adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd) is currently at the centre with the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and the Commander, Army records.
” Security agencies have zeroed in to ensure those who escaped are rearrested as well as trail the masterminds of the attack.
” Our security network has led to the re- arrest of a majority of the inmates that escaped as some have also come back to the centre on their own. ”
The commissioner further revealed that local hunters and traditional leaders were collaborating with security operatives to restore order and normalcy.
