Lawyer Allegedly Brutalized And Detained By A DPO, While Trying To Bail His Client.

Hello readers,
With the ongoing agitation and call for an end to police brutality in the country, a new incident of police brutality has just been witnessed and reported by a lawyer.

Joseph Arikpo, a Nigerian lawyer and member of the Nigeria bar association has narrated how he was assaulted, molested and detained by police officers while attempting to bail his client who has been in their detention for 6 days.
He explained that a friend of his client contacted him on the 8th of November, after which he headed to the Divisional Police Headquarters at Ikom, Cross River State.

He narrated that he met with the DPO of Ikom Divisional Police Headquarters and explained to him that he came to discuss the bail of his client that has been in police detention for six days.
He said the DPO emphasized that his client will not be released, while stating that he has arranged a meeting between the complainant and the accused(his client) for Wednesday 11th of November, 2020.
He further explained that he told the DPO that his client has already spent 6 days in custody, and should be released to him, while promising to bring him back on Wednesday for the meeting, but the DPO refused.
Seeing this, he said he told the DPO that his client has his constitutional rights and freedom to liberty, but the DPO responded to his claims saying he is stupid, while arguing with the DPO that he is not stupid and that the DPO should not say that again, the DPO repeated that he is stupid and gave him few punches afterward.

According to the lawyer, the DPO gave him repeated punches, while repeating that he his stupid, he claimed that when he got close to the DPO, he noticed that he was drunk, saying he perceived alcohol in his breath, he said he wanted to run away from him and as he was already insulted come back the following day, but the DPO instructed a female officer to close the gate while he told another officer to get him tear gas which was eventually used on him.
He said he was handcuffed and an IPO was instructed to take his statement, he said while taking his statement, whips and club was used on him so that he would write what they told him to write down.
He said at night while inside the cell, the DPO sent a female police officer to collect his cloth which has being stained with blood so as to conceal the evidence that he was brutalized and assaulted at the station, claiming he had already hid his shirt as that was his only evidence.

He explained that it was the Nigerian Bar association, ikom chapter that came to his rescue, and got him out of the police custody, he claimed they are now looking into the incident.
