A Danish cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard, who drew caricatures of Prophet Mohammed which sparked global outrage amongst Islamic faithfuls has reportedly passed on.
Danish newspaper, Berlingske, reports that Westergaard died at the age of 86 after suffering for a long time with an undisclosed illness.
Danish television station, TV2, quotes former editor of the newspaper which published the cartoons, Jyllands-Posten, as comfirming Westergaard’s death.
A long time friend of the deceased also confirmed his death to Danish public broadcaster, DR.
Westergaard’s cartoons published in 2005 sparked protests in several Islamic countries.
They also caused a huge diplomatic crisis for Denmark.
Westergaard received death threats and employed bodyguards who escorted him until his passing.
In 2010, a 28-year-old man broke into his apartment with an axe in an effort to kill him.
His death may be cause for celebration for many Muslims.
