After securing fourth-place in the Premier League at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, Chelsea will have their sights set on securing an even higher finish next time around.
Following Frank Lampard’s appointment as Chelsea head coach just over a year ago, questions were raised about what the Blues would be able to achieve under a manager who had yet to sample life as a coach in the Premier League , despite having established himself as one of the best midfielder’s the Premier League has ever had the pleasure of witnessing.
However, Lampard defied the odds to lead his side to a top-four finish, securing Champions League football for next season.
Whilst securing a top-four berth isn’t an achievement that should be ignored, the Blues will have their sights set on challenging the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, with the club making some very loud noises in the transfer market.
Having already secured deals for both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner in recent months, the Blues have now moved onto their next targets, as they look to try and build a squad capable of establishing itself as the top dog in English football once again.
football.london understands that Chelsea have identified Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz as their top target this summer, with talks between themselves and the Bundesliga club continuing to rumble on.
Whilst adding Havertz to their ranks would be a terrific signing for the Blues, it is the defensive ranks that need bolstering most.
The Blues were renowned for boasting a leaky back-line during the 2019/20 Premier League season, conceding no less than 54 league goals, highlighting their need to bolster their defensive options.
But is in goal where Lampard appears keen to strengthen most once a deal for Havertz is wrapped up, with the Blues chief having doubts about the quality of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Should Chelsea make the decision to let go of Arrizabalaga this summer, it appears as though they could go for Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Ajax’s Andre Onana or Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with all three names having been regularly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
But if the decision fell to Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, he would certainly be pushing Chelsea to make a move for Onana.
Last year, following Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, Neuer declared his love for the Cameroonian international, lavishing him with praise via a video message.
Neuer said: “I’m your biggest fan, of course, you played a very good season for Ajax.
“You and your guys deserved to be in the finals [of the Champions League] so don’t be too sad maybe you will get any chance in the future to come back to the semi-final final and have a better result than the last one.
“Take care and enjoy the celebration with Ajax for the Cup and for the championship in your league.
“You did a great a job and all the best in the future, my friend.”
It appears as though the German shot-stopper is a huge fan of Onana’s qualities and rates him highly, suggesting that Chelsea would be doing little wrong if they were to make a move for him this summer.
