Meet The Yoruba Wife Of Atiku Who Was Born A Christian But Converted To Islam After Marrying Him

Amina Titi-Abubakar is one of the wives of the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar. Constitutionally, she served as the Second Lady if the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999 and 2006.

Unlike the other wives, Atiku’s marriage to Titi wasn’t in the usual manner. She was born to a Christian family in Ilesha in 1949 which makes her originally a Christian. However, hwr family was against a marriage to a Muslim while she met in 1971 and they secretly go married in the Ikoyi magistrate court in Lagos. She converted to Islam after she married her husband.

She’s a human rights activist and woman emancipator. According to her profile as seen on Wikipedia, she started her advovacy for women rights in after she saw Nigerian girls in the streets of Rome while she was there to further her education and discovered they were being used as prostitutes.

After this experience, she became a full advocate for woman rights and used her position as second lady to further increase and spread the advocacy.

She is the founder of Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) and she initiated the private bill that led to the establishment of National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
