Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Christians will vote out APC, Babachir Lawal Dares Tinubu

In protest against the All Progressives Congress (APC) for fielding two Muslims as presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2023 presidential election, Christians in the north will hold prayers and use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC).

“It is obvious that the Northern Christian is a target of political, religious, and economic oppression. But we are up to the task. Babachir Lawal

, a former secretary to the Government of the Federation, said on Friday, ”

Speaking at a summit of APC northern Christian leaders, Mr. Lawal claimed that Christians in the north were the target of a “calculated anti-Christian exclusion agenda,” adding, “We will protect ourselves. We will heavily employ the PVC and our prayers as our primary weapons in 2023.

He criticised the party and its presidential candidate Bola Tinubu for choosing Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno who shares Mr. Tinubu’s Muslim faith, in defiance of the outrage of northern Christians who feel left out.

The leader of the APC criticised the incumbent party for remaining silent regarding their complaints and refusal of the ticket. He claimed that rather than reaching out to Christians in the north, the party and Messrs. Tinubu and Shettima went about hiring fictitious bishops to make the vice presidential candidate’s selection seem to be a popular decision among Nigerian Christians.

Why is the APC itself silent about our rejection of this Muslim-Muslim ticket

, one might wonder? And why haven’t any of the other crisis-causers initiated communication with Christians?

Why do they take church groups and employ phoney bishops to further malign the Church? Why don’t they try to make amends instead of starting a vicious media war against CAN and the Church? Actually, things don’t add up.

Mr. Tinubu claimed that his decision to run with a Muslim was driven by competence, but his choice has drawn criticism from Christians who view it as a divisive politics of exclusion that would exacerbate the divide between the two dominant religions.

The State Security Service warned President Muhammadu Buhari in a covert memo that Mr. Tinubu’s choice of a vice presidential candidate would lead to a sectarian crisis that could destabilise Nigeria.
