#NewsRoundup: NNPP harvests another APC Senator, “I’d fight APC for my ticket” – Yobe North Candidate

These are the top stories around legislators and the institution of parliament in Nigeria you mustn’t miss out on this Monday:

Yobe Senate Ticket: I’ll fight the substitution of my name with Lawan’s – Machina

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Yobe North Senatorial Candidate, Bashir Sheriff Machina, has described the substitution of his name for Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the list submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as undemocratic and illegal.

Addressing a news conference on Friday, Machina who was announced the winner of the Senatorial primary conducted by the party in Yobe, urged the APC National Working Committee to submit his name as the candidate else he would take legal action.

“I will take measures by first appealing to my party that if this action was truly done, it should be corrected, possibly if it was erroneously done. And it was deliberately done, we’re actually seeking redress from the National Working Committee of our party under the leadership of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. I remain the candidate.

“I remain the candidate and it remains so. I hope our leadership will take the necessary measures. We’ll work hard to exploit and explore all the necessary channels as provided by our guidelines. In the event of the contrary, as Nigerian citizens and as law-abiding citizens, the constitution of our country being the overall law above every aspect of our lives as Nigerians, I would’ve no choice but to resort to court (legal) action,” he added.

APC loses another Senator to NNPP

Ahead of the 2023 General Election, the electoral fortunes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) appear to be threatened as more members of the governing party continue to defect following the conclusion of its primaries.

The lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Haliru Jika over the weekend dumped the APC for the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP).

Senator Jika made his resignation known in a letter dated June 16 and addressed to the Chairman of Kafin Madaki Ward, Ganjuwa Local Government Area.

He noted that he left the ruling APC after his supporters mounted pressure on him to do so, especially since his efforts to obtain the party’s governorship ticket failed.

Reps want FCTA to cover all open manholes in Abuja

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to provide covers with locks to prevent theft for all opened manholes in Abuja

This resolution followed a motion moved by Muhammed Musa Pali, during Thursday’s plenary at the Green Chamber, where he blamed the development on the “activities of scavengers and other unpatriotic individuals.”

Stressing that many people have sustained permanent injuries as a result of falling into open manholes, he added that many vehicle tyres have been damaged as a result of running over the manholes.

The House therefore, urged the Nigeria Police Force to provide surveillance security at all times against theft of manhole covers.

APC Candidate disagrees with INEC over its position on Akwa Ibom Guber candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Eket Federal Constituency, Eseme Eyibo, has tackled the Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini.

His disagreement with the REC stems from the commission’s refusal to accept the candidacy of Akanimo Udofia, as the APC candidate having polled 1276 votes, as well as Igini’s position that the party does not have a gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 general elections.

“We wish to report that the APC governorship primary scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the Sheer Grace Arena, Nsikak Eduok Avenue, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State did not hold at all,” Igini said.

Eyiboh described Igini’s assertion as a ‘voyage to self-destruct’ wondering why he (Igini) failed to go to the stipulated venue of Ekpo Obot, where the primary took place rather than Sheer Grace Arena.

Kwara Governorship candidate unveils former lawmaker as running mate

Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Yaman Shuaib Abdullahi has named Gbenga Makanjuola as his running mate ahead of the 2023 elections.

This came to the fore in Ilorin, the state capital during the presentation of a Certificate of Return to the Governorship Candidate and the unveiling of his running mate.

Makanjuola who has previously represented Ekiti/Isin/Oke-Ero/Irepodun Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, contested for the PDP Kwara South Senatorial ticket but lost the election.

He served as Deputy Chief of Staff to former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki in the 8th National Assembly, and is currently a Federal Commissioner at the Revenue, Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
