Nigerian Army Gives Details Of 17, 000 Boko Haram Fighters That Have Surrendered

The Nigerian Army has given account of how 17, 000 former fighters of Jamā’ at Ahl as- Sunnah lid- Da’ wah wa’ l- Jihād popularly called Boko Haram have surrendered to the Nigerian government troops over few years.

According to Christopher Musa, the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force ” Operations Hadin Kai, ” he said those that have so far surrendered are ” comprised combatants, non- combatants, those conscripted against their wish and family members”

This was made known in Maidugiri on Friday when Christopher Musa visited office of the North- East Development Commission (NEDC) in the Borno state capital. He added that the overwhelming number of former fighters turning themselves in prompted the army to seek the help of the NEDC in taking care of the former combatants and their families.

He stressed that the rapid manner with which former members of the dreaded Boko Haram had been surrendering to the government has become a source of concern to leadership of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), who were in high spirit and believing that Boko Haram fighters will simply collapse into ISWAP after the death of the leader, Sheihk Abubakar Shakau.

Peoples Gazette reports that he reveal that Islamic State fighters put a system in place to discourage Boko Haram fighters from surrendering to the government, however he added that the strategies put in place by the government have encouraged more fighters to come out of the bush and be rehabilitated and be re- integrated into the society.

” From the Presidency, Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, everyone is putting hands on deck to see that the menace is ended, and we have peace in the North East.

” We know that if we have peace in the northeast it will transcend to other regions, ” Mr Musa stressed.

He appreciated the efforts of NEDC in the providing humanitarian and infrastructural assistance to displaced persons in the region and he urged that such gesture should be extended to the military who have been putting in their best in bringing back peace and security to the region.
