The Nigerian Navy explains why Instagram comedian, Ahmed Gafar, with stage name Cute Abiola, was detained and held captive, after his disappearance went viral.
The Director of Information, Navy Headquarters, Cdre Suleman Dahun in a statement revealed that the comedian, Cute Abiola was arrested because he broke and breached the Armed Forces of Nigeria’ s social media policy.
According to the statement, personnel are not permitted to share photos of themselves or their colleagues dressed in military gear, or images depicting military structures.
The statement reads: ” Cute Abiola is not missing! ! ! He is in custody for breaching Armed Forces Social Media Policy, ” the Navy spokesperson said.
The Armed Forces Act 2017 puts up social media guidelines to prevent members of the Armed Forces from engaging in unethical behavior on social media, particularly behavior that could expose them to enemy traps or jeopardize ongoing military operations.
” Personnel should not post their pictures or those of their colleagues in military uniforms, or pictures containing military structures, platforms and other military related items, ” said one of the slew of cautions in the guidelines.
Military personnel were also obligated to issue warnings to their family members about problematic online behavior.
” Personnel will be held liable for any security issues arising from postings in respect of them by civilian friends or relations. They are therefore, to educate their friends and relations as necessary regarding military security and what should not be posted on social media, ” the guidelines said.
The comedian’ s management in a previous post alleged that Cute Abiola was not provided with food since his arrest, stating that he is an ulcer patient, and depriving him of food would only deteriorate his health as no one knows when he would be released.
Cute Abiola was detained on instructions from the Nigerian Navy Headquarters, according to the statement, which offered no facts about his crime.
