A lot of people were taken aback when Islamic scholar, Sheikh Gumi, alleged that non-Muslim soldiers attack communities in northern states, leading bandits to seek vengeance by killing residents. Former presidential spokesman to Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, took the allegation seriously and challenged Gumi to present evidence to back his claim.
Reno said he reached out to Gumi who sent in a recording of a discussion he had with a Muslim soldier in 2014. Reno then went on to post the recording on his social media platform.
In the audio recording, the soldier narrated how a certain Captain Kolawale would take his unit to a town for operation and he would make sure that everyone in that town was killed including women and children. He described how ruthless this captain is and what he made the men in his unit do. Gumi asked the soldier the tribe of this Captain to which the soldier replied that Captain Kolawale is a Yoruba man. Gumi further asked for Captain Kolawale’s religion. The soldier replied that Captain Kolawale was once a Muslim but converted to Christianity.
The soldier went on to say that the operation was done to get bandits and cattle rustlers but when they got there, they did not find bandits or people with guns to cause mayhem but guns for hunting. They did not even meet cows there. The soldier claimed that countless civilians were killed in such operations. The audio recording is said to have been done on the 25th of July 2014.
At the moment, Sheikh Gumi is currently helping the government reach out to bandits who have been causing mayhem in northern Nigeria.
