Days after the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuffs and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria had embarked on an indefinite strike as a way to protest the maltreatment of Fulani herdsmen and northerners in the South, they vowed to stop supply of food to the south until they apologize. They also went ahead to demand the sum of 7.2 billion Naira as compensation for properties and lives lost during the Shasha Market incident in Oyo State.
Reacting to the decision of the Northern traders, Southerners have threaten to block oil produce from going to the north as well. However, the Association of South East Union through the president have reacted to the decision by the Northern traders. He said;
The blockade on food supplies to Igboland by northern traders cannot make them panic and call for help as most northerners would feel. We value our lives more than any food that we would get because it is only those who have life and at peace that can eat and digest it properly. As such, we will not exchange our lives for food. Infact, their decision will help the plans of Ndigbo through this association to attain total self sufficiency in food production. For we can feed ourselves. However, if bringing their food to the south will cost us our lives and properties, it will be good if they keep it.
What do you think? Is there any truth in his statement? Can Ndigbo really feed themselves without needing the food from North? Lets hear your response.
