I wish to express my thoughts on the recent apprehension of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
I decided to speak on the topic above because it has become a thing of concern to every Nigerian, permit me to make my stand on this issue very clear, I do not support Sunday Igboho nor intend to criticize the federal government, my open letter is focused on what the federal government can do to avoid more of Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu from rising again tomorrow.
Understandably, Sunday Igboho’s demand for a separate nation is a threat to the unity of Nigeria and that’s why the Nigerian government is doing everything possible to bring every secessionist to book, you will also agree with me that some of these secessionists have dared the government by taking certain illegal actions that in one way or another threatened the tranquility we enjoy in the country.
Having said that, I think that arresting Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu will not solve the problem, they might be the leaders but arresting them without looking into what made them challenge the government and find a solution to them might not yield positive results because they have huge followers and the possibility of another person starting from where they stopped tomorrow is high.
Having made my viewpoint clear, I will like to suggest two things that the federal government can do to solve the problem of separatists in the country.
We all know that Nigeria is a multi-ethnic nation and most of these freedom fighters stood up based on fighting for the right of their people, they believed that their people are not getting what they are supposed to get. I will suggest that the government should seize this opportunity to restructure the country and balance the whole thing, every region should be allowed to control their resource and enjoy quality education, steady power supply, jobs, good roads, and every other infrastructure.
- Youths should be encouraged to go into farming.
Nigeria is the most populous black nation on earth, and there’s a need for them to be producing at least 80 percent of what they eat. With the rate of unemployment in the country, stranded and aggrieved youths can easily be brainwashed by separatists who promised them heaven on earth. My suggestion is that the federal government should make basic farming materials and startup funds available for youths to encourage them to go into the farming business, it will not only put an end to the agitation and protests in the country but will also boost the economy and create more job opportunities.
