Many people know that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is among the strong forces opposing Prince Uche Secondus and seeking to remove him from his post as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Secondus had openly blasted Wike for being part of this after a court in Port Harcourt initially restrained him from claiming to be a PDP member and to stop parading himself as the National Chairman of the party. Since then, more developments have been emerging from Rivers State headed by Wike which point to the fact that he is backing the move to remove Secondus.

Two new things that emerged from Rivers to support the moves against Secondus are his suspension by his Ward 5 in Ikuru, Andoni LGA and the decision of the Court in Port Hardcourt which went ahead to uphold the suspension of Secondus. Well, there are ways Wike’s opposition against Secondus may affect his own political career which the Rivers State Governor may not know. This article will discuss some of them.
First, Wike would lose the backing of Secondus. This is the first way the opposition against Secondus will work against Wike. Or do you expect Secondus to turn around and back the person that opposed him? Secondus has political relevance. His support for Wike means something in the higher political ambition Wike may be nursing ahead of 2023. But with the way things are, Wike will lose the backing of Secondus for fighting him.
Second, Wike will lose the support of the loyalists of Secondus. The way politics works is that once you lose the master, his supporters and loyalists have also been lost. Secondus is not a political newbie or lightweight. He may not be a Senator or Governor, but the height he has reached is high enough that he has many political loyalists and supporters. Having held other posts in the past and clinched the post of National Chairman of PDP, Secondus has come a long way. He has many loyalists in his state (Rivers State) and across the country. Since Wike may be contesting for higher or national political office, Secondus will simply direct his loyalists and supporters not to back Wike for opposing him. This will affect Wike too.
Moreover, there are those who may not be happy with the way Wike treated Secondus. This category of people can be found in different states in Nigeria. They expected Wike to open up on the issue he had with Secondus and explain why he is not supporting his former key ally. But Wike did not open up even till now. Nobody knows whether Wike is opposing Secondus for good and justifiable reasons or for his own personal gains. But, due to the way he has treated Secondus, this category of people who are not happy about it may not support Wike’s ambition too. They may feel that it is not right for you to bring another person down and expect others to support you to rise higher as a pat on the back.
