The students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in Anambra state, are at loggerheads with the school authorities over a claim that a certain unidentified lecturer flogged an undergraduate over a dress code.
According to the Punch Newspaper, it happened that a certain Ankara dress code was issued for the Economics department where the young lady was studying, but the lady appeared in the department with different clothes for a reason known to her. This was what inculcated the anger of the lecturer and she was seriously flogged.
However, the occurrence has generated much criticism from the entire students and the school authorities, and as a result, the school has organized a panel to investigate the matter because the administration of the institutions has vowed that the lecturer will not go unpunished.
The question that I believe will be raised by several Nigerians is: is there supposed to be any kind of uniform recommendation for undergraduates in higher institutions?
According to the report in the Punch Newspaper, the students have blamed the Hobbesian conduct of the lecturer on the school authorities. Since the act was unacceptable, many of them have said the authorities are responsible for the idea of a uniform recommendation, which precipitated the action of the lecturer.
Be that as it may, the lecturer needs to realize that the institution is not a primary or secondary school where he will treat an undergraduate in such a manner.
It would be better for the university board to jettison any idea of uniforms in the institution as it may generate further chaos among the students and lecturers.
Again, the lecturer who was guilty of the allegations should be pardoned. The reason is that the lecturer may have overreacted because he may have thought the undergraduate purposely did what she did with the attitude that no one could castigate her actions since they are in higher institutions. It is very vital to know that if the school authorities do something terrible against the lecturer, that will give the undergraduate more room to oppress any other lecturers at a future date.
Thus, it would be better for the institution to pardon the lecturer and let the matter be.
