The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the last general election because of various mistakes that the party made unconsciously that led to the defeat of the party. The election was between President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar in which Buhari was announced as the winner of the election under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the year twenty nineteen.
A lot of factors are responsible for the downfall but only one of those factors will be extensively discussed in this article. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made a mistake by selecting the wrong candidate during the election to serve as a running mate alongside Atiku Abubakar. The choice of candidate is important in every election but the PDP was not conscious of this until the end of the election.
The opposition party has been struggling to get into power since six years ago when the party lost the 2015 general election to the All Progressive Congress (APC) mistakenly. Prior to the advent of the APC in power, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully ruled Nigeria for a total of 16 years in a row but due to some internal crises among top members of the party, the party lost into the hands of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2015.
In the year twenty nineteen, another golden opportunity was presented in front of the party. Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi were paired together with Atiku Abubakar as the flag bearer of the party and Peter Obi as his running mate. The selection was inaccurate for the opposition party then. Peter Obi shouldn’t have been chosen as the running mate of Atiku Abubakar.
Peter Obi came from the Southeast part of the country and there are votes do not usually come out of the region compared to the northern states. Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi tried on their parts but the votes from Obi’s region cannot take the PDP to its promised land. The party should not repeat the same mistake this year again, they should consider candidates from the North for the upcoming presidential election in the year 2023.
