Osoba Reveals APC Agreed On Rotation Between North And South Before 2015

Former Ogun state governor and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Olusegun Osoba, has revealed that the ruling party agreed on zoning during its merger stage.

According to Osoba, who was the chairman of the constitution drafting committee of the APC at the time, the gentlemen’s agreement was not drafted in the party’s rules in order not to go against the fundamental rights of anyone to aspire to any office in the country.

”When we were forming the APC, we agreed that the presidency would be given to the north and we the progressives in the southwest agreed.

”So, some who were not there cannot tell us to stop that. I stand on the fact that we should rotate the presidency between the north and south of the party.”

Daily Trust newspaper reports that the minister of works and housing, Babajide Fashola, recently called the attention of the APC leadership to the fact that there was a gentleman’s agreement on zoning between north and south.

Fashola said the issue of zoning was more of a gentleman’s agreement in APC and it behooves all parties to honour it.

On his part, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state said zoning should be respected because it is a strategy to winning the 2023 presidential election.

According to the governor, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), should allow power to move to the southern part of the country for the sake of fairness.

On the other hands, some politicians and APC chieftains from the north have countered Fashola’s position, arguing that there is no written arrangement for zoning.

The north, which produced incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, has been holding on to power since 2015.

When asked where Buhari successor should come from the Kano state governor said it should be from southern Nigeria for the sake of fairness.

“I think the zoning should be respected. It is a strategy to winning election. It should be from the southern part of the country, but that will be a consensus.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he will have no hand in deciding Nigeria’s next leader says the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be the major deciding factor.

President Muhammadu Buhari said that is why the ruling party is conducting fresh nationwide registration for its members at the ward, local government, and state levels, Punch reports.

The president noted that the aim is to make sure the legacy of continuity stands even after his administration.

His words:

”About succession, what this admin can do is to make sure APC lasts beyond this administration. And that is the best way to go for the party and for the country.”

The Nigerian leader revealed that the issue and plan on who will take over from him is to be handled by the party entirely and not himself, Daily Nigerian also reported

He explained:

“Succession plan depends on the party. The party will sit and make its decision by the constituencies they won. So those who want to be president, better join APC.”
