Isa Pantami

According to SaharaReporters, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the First Lady, launched a veiled attack on the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Ibrahim Isa Pantami, on Sunday, September 12, urging the Minister to have the fortitude to accomplish what he preached as an Islamic cleric.

On her verified Instagram page, the president’ s wife published an old video of Pantami crying during one of his speeches at a mosque.

The video is accompanied by a message in Hausa: ” A chire tsoro a Yi abinda ya dace, ” which means ” Be courageous and do the right thing. ”

Pantami and his reciter behind him fell into tears in the brief video as the minister instructed the reciter to deliver a verse about Allah’ s fear.

The First Lady is well- known for criticising her husband’ s government and appointees openly.

Pantami is being accused of academic fraud in connection with his appointment to the title of ” Professor” at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) in Imo State, where he never worked.

The Minister was yet to answer to the First Lady’ s challenge as well as an academic fraud claim levelled against him by a Nigerian scholar resident in the United States, Prof. Farooq Kperogi, over the weekend.

He further noted that Pantami could not have become a professor at the institution because he did not teach, conduct research, or provide any service, and that professorship was not a monetary title.

PANTAMI’ s ALLEGED ACADEMIC FRAUD

Meanwhile, during the week, Farooq Kperogi a US Associate Professor and social critic, described the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, receiving a Professorship from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Imo State, as ” some self- humiliating intellectual duplicity perpetrated by Pantami himself. ”

He further noted that Pantami could not have become a professor at the institution because he did not teach, conduct research, or provide any service, and that professorship was not a monetary title.

Farooq Kperogi

On Saturday, September 11, Kperogi revealed this in a post headed ” Pantami’ s Fake Professorship Joins Other Intellectual Fraud, ” according to reports from SaharaReporters and Gazettengr.

The author went on to say that the Communication Minister was a junior lecturer at Bauchi’ s Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University before going to the United Kingdom for his PhD degree, adding that he had no business lecturing for FUTO.

He chastised the minister for committing fraud to obtain his professorship, claiming that he lacked the years required to obtain the highest academic rank.

Kperogi said, ” I later learned that Pantami’ s ” professorship” was granted by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, where he has never taught. It doesn’ t take much thought to see that the ” professorial promotion” and, worse, its promotion in the media is some self- humiliating intellectual duplicity perpetrated by Pantami himself.

In other words, Pantami is not qualified to be elevated to the level of professor at the two universities with which he is affiliated. Most crucially, he is ineligible to be named professor at ANY university in the globe because he currently does not teach, conduct research, or provide service at any university.

” A professorship isn’ t a flippant, honorary title that can be arbitrarily conferred on people who pay for it— as honorary doctorates have become. It is the crowning accomplishment and the highest professional rank that is bestowed on people who teach and research at a university.

” It’ s like the position of permanent secretary for the civil service, editorship for journalism, ambassadorship for the diplomatic service, managing directorship or the position of a CEO for the private sector, or being a field marshal in the military. ”

Pantami’ s promotion from assistant professor to associate professor took five years, according to him, and his last academic position at Islamic University in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, was not enough to make him a professor.

” But he couldn’ t possibly be promoted to a professorship at the Islamic University in Madinah because having terminated his contract with the school to take up a government appointment, he is no longer in the school’ s employ. Plus, his last rank at the university was as an assistant professor.

” To be promoted to the full professor he would first need to be an associate professor for at least 5 years, but he was assistant professor for only two years, and you need to be an assistant professor for at least 5 years to be promoted to associate professor, ” Kperogi added.

Remember that Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and digital economy and a well- known Muslim cleric, has professed sympathies for terrorist organisations like al- Qaeda and Boko Haram.

According to BBC reporting, on April 23, he declared that al- Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden was ” a better Muslim than himself” in one speech from the 2000s, and that ” he was glad when infidels were massacred” in another.

Last week, recordings of him voicing these sentiments began circulating on social media, prompting calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to dismiss him.

However, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said the minister was being ” subject[ed] to a ‘ cancel campaign” in his first statement since the issue began.

” In the 2000s, the minister was a man in his twenties; next year he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions- often rightly- change” , the statement said.

At the weekend, the minister attempted to retract some of his previous statements, telling a local newspaper that some of his remarks were based on his ” knowledge of religious problems at the time” and that he has since revised his stance ” based on new evidence and maturity. ”

But it hasn’ t stopped calls for his dismissal or resignation, with many people adopting the #PantamiMustGo hashtag on Twitter to show their displeasure with his access to sensitive data as the communications minister.

He was also defended using the hashtag #PantamiMustStay, which highlighted the religious and ethnic divides in this multi- ethnic society.

WHY ARE SOME NIGERIANS WORRIED ABOUT PANTAMI?

He manages institutions responsible for databases of Nigerians and expatriates in the country as the chairman of the communications ministry.

Some individuals are concerned that a minister with a history of sympathising with Islamist militant groups has access to such sensitive information.

Mr Pantami is also in charge of the online infrastructure for most government ministries and agencies, as well as the military forces, intelligence agencies, and Nigeria’ s satellite infrastructure, which supports the air force’ s communications and navigation.

He appears to be receiving a lot of anger on social media.

Ordinary Nigerians are less concerned about the minister’ s former opinions offline, and he has gotten backing from Muslim groups in the north, many of whom do not share his extremist views but believe his apology proves he has changed.
